I have made the following observation in response to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/consult.fingal.ie\/en\/consultation\/proposed-temporary-closure-stockhole-lane-co-dublin\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/consult.fingal.ie\/en\/consultation\/proposed-temporary-closure-stockhole-lane-co-dublin\" target=\"_blank\">public consultation<\/a> on the temporary closure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>If we are to achieve the necessary improvement in conditions for walking and cycling to achieve national and local goals for road safety and climate, we need to ensure that that all maintenance and repair work on roads avails of the opportunity to improve conditions for active travel.<\/p><p>In this instance, the road to be resurfaced lacks a footpath over most of the stretch to be resurfaced and is unpleasant for cycling. The M1 motorway and R139, R132 and R107 regional roads provide alternatives for all potential through trips. Therefore there is no reason for this road to be used by motor vehicles for anything other than local access to\/from Stockhole and Baskin Lanes.&nbsp;<\/p><p>In these circumstances, the road layout should reflect this purpose and be designed to prioritise active travel access. These examples from the Netherlands&nbsp; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com\/2009\/07\/country-road.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com\/2009\/07\/country-road.html<\/a> and France <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/actu.fr\/occitanie\/villeneuve-la-comptal_11430\/aude-une-voie-innovante-ou-les-velos-ont-la-priorite-dans-un-village-du-lauragais_49069204.html\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/actu.fr\/occitanie\/villeneuve-la-comptal_11430\/aude-une-voie-innovante-ou-les-velos-ont-la-priorite-dans-un-village-du-lauragais_49069204.html<\/a> show the road markings appropriate in these circumstances.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Update December 2023: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I didn&#8217;t make any progress when the lane was being resurfaced, I raised this again and the Area Committee agreed the following motion in December 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>That this Committee recommends that, in light of previous discussions when<br>the southern part of Stockhole Lane (between the R139 roundabouts and Baskin<br>Lane) was being resurfaced, and the recent large number of residents moving<br>into Stockhole Lane who walk or cycle to avail of local services, that the Council<br>examines the options to improve safety for people walking and cycling including<br>reallocating road space, consistent with the function of this road as a local<br>access route rather than a through route for motor traffic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Council plans to resurface part of Stockhole lane south of the junction with Baskin Lane.
